About Mrs. McEvoy (Your teacher from September-February)
Hello! While Ms. Hawe’s name appears on your schedules, she will be on maternity leave for the first half of the year. That’s where I come in! My name is Mrs. McEvoy and I will be the 7th grade English teacher at OBHS until February 2016.
Incase you were wondering exactly who I am, let me tell you about myself. I was born and raised in East Norwich, and I am proud to say I attended the Oyster Bay- East Norwich School District from Kindergarten until graduation senior year. I stayed home to attend college at the Long Island University at C.W. Post and graduated with my bachelors in Adolescent English Education (that means I can teach English to grades 7-12). Right after college, I started working at OBHS during the 2014-2015 school year. I began the year as a permanent substitute but quickly became the English Department’s Teaching Assistant. As the ELA TA I worked in 7th, 8th and 11th grade English classes. Yes, I even worked in Ms. Hawe’s classroom!
I live locally with my husband, our five-year-old son (who is so excited about kindergarten this year), our two puppies, Eli and Anchor and our bunny rabbit, Chip. I will be teaching during the day, but I will also be attending classes at LIU Post at night to obtain my Masters Degree and become certified as an ENL teacher (English as a New Language).
I am strongly invested in the Oyster Bay community, as I am thankful for all it has contributed to my life and how it has helped shape me into the adult I am today. I hope to be a positive addition to the lives of my students and cannot wait to meet and learn more about each and every one of them!
About Ms. Hawe (Your teacher from February-June)
Hello, I'm Ms. Hawe and I'm so excited to be your 7th grade English teacher this year. I'll be asking you to tell me a lot about yourselves, so I thought it was only fair to tell you a little about me.
This is my sixth year teaching 7th grade English at Oyster Bay High School. Before I came to Oyster Bay, I taught at a high school in New York City. I currently live in Glen Head with my husband, a cat named Fry, and a dog named Sierra.
I grew up in Alexandria, Virginia and moved to New York to go to college at New York University. I majored in playwriting and anthropology. I love learning, so I decided that four years of college weren't enough for me! After NYU, I went to Teachers College at Columbia University to get my Masters degree in Higher Education Policy and Administration. I worked at Columbia University as a program director for a small fellowship program for four years before deciding that what I really want to do is teach! So it was back to school for me again--this time for a degree in English Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.
In my free time, I love to read and write (no surprise there!). I have too many favorite books and authors to list here, but I'll be sure to share them with you during the year. You'll also probably hear me talk about my own writing. I am currently writing a young adult novel. Just like you'll do in class, I workshop my writing with a writing group that meets twice a month. I also write plays and screenplays and have even had some plays produced.
Aside from reading and writing, I love to play with my dog, go for bike rides, and travel. In fact, the picture on this page is of me hiking on a glacier in New Zealand!
I can't wait to get to know all of you this year!
